* maximixing the conversational potential of games & activities
* eliciting and incorporporating follow-up questions to expand student conversations
* coaching students how to use the language during activities
* using the double-line method for changing partners
* creating alternate versions of effective activities for different topics
Task 1 : Double-lines : Are you a coffee person or a tea person?
( 30 minutes , good ice-breaker )
Double-lines is a classic AUA technique for pairing and changing partners easily. It is good for getting Ss to work with new partners and is easy for monitoring and fixing language problem.
1.Write the question ‘Are you a coffee person or a tea person? on the board. 2.Elicit the meaning of this somewhat idiomatic expression ( Which do you prefer , coffee or tea ? )
3.Elicit / explain why it is unusual / idiomatic ( nouns used uncharacteristically as adjectives )
4.Model a sample exchange by having a student ask you the main question:
A : Are you a coffee person or a tea person?
B : I’m a coffee person.
A : Why do you like coffee ( better than tea) ? Why do you prefer coffee ?
B : Because it wakes me up.How about you ? Are you a coffee person or a tea person?
5.Elicit lot of WH-question words ( Who,what,when,why,which,how,how often,how much,how many , etc),and have the rest of the class ask you follow-up questions.
6.Write the question words and questions on the board.
7.Half of the Ss stand in one line and half in another.Have the lines face each other at a slight distance.
8.Have students align themselves so they are facing a partner in the other line.
9.Have two students oppossite lines step forward and model the conversation using coffee and tea for the rest of students.
10.Be sure this pair uses lots of follow-up questions. ( Others should help if they get stuck?)
11.Have everybody step forward and have a chat.
12.As the buzz dies down, call a time-out,trouble-shoot any language prolems.
13.Now,Have the first person in one line go to the other end of the line.
and have all the other Ss in that line move forward one partner.
14.Everybody now has a new partner and you can put the next pair of words.
15.Pre-empt any potential language prolems ( see below )
***** Countable nouns will require pluralization,Some grammar chaos is possible here.Remind students before they begin discussing these pairs of words.
Smooth transition to any lesson : Use this type of ‘floating topic’ activity ( In any lesson. This will allow you to seque nimbly into any topic in any book.
Teacher Task : ( 5 minutes ) : Brainstom more binary pairs.
